Alternatives That May Help
There are many different ways from which we can save our selves and this planet from global warming. All we need to do is replace the carbon emmitting fuels such as petroleum, with carbon neutral fuels such as ethanol. A carbon nuetral fuel is a fuel which takes and equivelent quantity of carbon out of the atmosphere as what it releases again through combustion. This will stop the rise in the amounts of carbon in the atmosphere but will not redverse it.
Ethanol? Is It Worth It?
Ehtanol burns hotter than octane but cooler than diesel. A petrol engine would require minute alterations so that the injectors inject more fuel to get the same power and torque ratings and some models would require a new clylinder head and crank case to support the hotter combustion. A car running on methanol will have carbon nuetral with its exhaust emisions. This is because x amount of carbon is taken out of the atmposhere through respiration in order for the corn, of wheat etc to be grown, this amount equals the carbon emissions which are released when the fuel is combusted after the fermentation process. However, this fuel requires more land to be provided as growing feilds for the crops used, and this means that less land is used for uor consumption puroses or more wild life land space is used.
Cycles, Walking, What Difference Does It Make
Some people prefer to avoid the whole combustion thing all together. Much less CO2 emissions would be released if a whole city stopped driving, or bussing and began to bike, walk or any other means of self imposed travel. There would still be carbon emissions due to the factory methods of production, however city smog would be greatly reduced to almost transparent or absent as there would be very few sorces of combustion.

Electricity Production
Another major factor to carbon dioxide emissions is from the way many places still produce electricity. With more and more dwellings being built, and digital technology becoming the main sorce of entertainment and communication, electricity demands go up. As demands reach and exceed a genorators capacity, a new station has to be built. Coal. A coal power plant is one of the biggest power genoration options as it has constant heat and less things can go wrong compared to hydroelectric stations. The coal plants use the combution of coal to heat water to the point it evapourates and under high pressure it passes throuhg a single stage turbine which turns the rotor of a genorator. However, in this method, there are large amounts of coal burnt, and the combustion never ends. The eco friendly alternative is a hydroelectric power plant, these are built into the down stream face of a river dam. These use the high pressure torrents of water to rotate the turbines, and there are many different types of turbines. Some use water falling in down drains from the top of the dam and use its speed to turn the turbine, others use the high pressure of the water at ther base of the dam to turn the turbines. There are only two major problems with this method of electricity generation; when something goes wrong it is harder to fix due to torrenting water and high pressure [this is behind the flood gates, inside them it is reletively easy to fix]. Also, once built, the dam and the plant, are literally set in stone - no changes can be made. If electricity demands rise beyond the plants generation capacity, a new one is built, or a easier option: Coal. However, when a dam is built, the plant usualy gets an extra 2 - 3 turbines and generators. This means that over the following 50 years, the dam can provide more electricity, but also the power plant can cope with busy times such as easter, or christmas [when more energy consuming lights are left on later into the night].
